Thinking About an Animal Tattoo in Seoul? Let’s Chat!
Hey! I’m Haesol (해솔), and I’ve been working as a tattoo artist here in Seoul for about 10 years now. Time flies, right? A lot of people reach out to me, and I thought it might be helpful to give a little introduction about what I do and how things work around here.
My studio is located near Children’s Grand Park Station, in the Konkuk/Seongsu area. It’s a really cool neighborhood with tons of cafes and shops. Easy to get to by subway. A lot of people ask me about the different styles I work with, and what it’s like getting a tattoo in Korea, so hopefully, this will answer some of your questions!
I get a lot of people asking me about animal tattoos, specifically. Whether it’s their beloved pet, a spirit animal, or just an animal they admire, it’s a really popular choice. I really enjoy working on these kinds of pieces, especially when I can incorporate a little Korean flair into the design.
What I Actually Do – Animal Styles and More
Okay, so here’s the thing: my absolute favorite style to work with is Korean traditional art. You might know it as Minhwa. I just love the vibrant colors, the bold lines, and the symbolic meanings behind each design. I really enjoy bringing those traditional elements into modern tattoo designs. I’ve done several pieces incorporating traditional Korean animals like tigers, dragons, and cranes – all with their own unique symbolism.
But I’m not limited to just that! I also really enjoy doing fine line work. It’s super delicate and elegant, and it’s perfect for smaller designs. Black & gray is another popular choice, especially for realistic pieces. I’ve done quite a few animal portraits in black & gray, and I find working on those really satisfying because it allows me to focus on the details and textures. I’m also comfortable with old school styles, dotwork, and minimalist designs. So, basically, if you have an idea, I’m happy to chat about it and see if I can bring it to life.
Of course, hygiene is super important to me. I use new, sterilized needles for every single client, and I follow all the necessary safety protocols. You don’t have to worry about that at all.
Design Ideas and What’s Popular (Especially Animal!)
I’ve noticed a lot of people are really into getting animal tattoos that represent their birth year in the Chinese zodiac. It’s a cool way to connect with your heritage and get a meaningful tattoo at the same time. A lot of people come to me wanting to incorporate Korean traditional designs into their animal tattoos, which I absolutely love doing.
I also get a lot of requests for fine line animal tattoos, especially small, minimalist designs. Think tiny birds, delicate butterflies, or simple outlines of cats or dogs. Those are always super cute and easy to place anywhere on the body. I’ve also done some pretty cool realistic animal tattoos, like dog portraits and snake designs. Those take a bit more time and detail, but the results are always worth it.
Animal tattoos, I think, are especially popular because they can symbolize so many things. Strength, loyalty, freedom, grace… the possibilities are endless. And you can really personalize them to reflect your own personality and interests.
Small designs usually take about 1-2 hours, while larger, more detailed ones can take 3-4 hours, or even longer. If you want something really intricate, we might need to break it up into multiple sessions. It all depends on the size, detail, and color palette.
To be honest, some designs are definitely more challenging than others. For example, realistic portraits with a lot of shading and detail can be quite time-consuming. Fine line work requires a steady hand and a lot of patience. But I enjoy the challenge! That’s what makes it fun.
How to Find My Studio (Easy Subway Access!)
Okay, so my studio is located near Children’s Grand Park Station. If you’re taking the subway, it’s about a 5-minute walk from Exit 3. Super easy! I’m in the Konkuk/Seongsu area, which is really lively. So, if you arrive early for your appointment, you can grab a coffee at one of the many cafes nearby. There’s even a cute cat cafe a few blocks away if you’re an animal lover!
If you’re coming from Gangnam, it takes about 20 minutes by subway. From Hongdae, it’s probably closer to 30-40 minutes, depending on the line. Seoul’s subway system is pretty efficient, so it’s usually the easiest way to get around.
Here’s the thing: the building itself can be a little tricky to find. It’s tucked away on a side street. Look for a small convenience store on the corner, and my building is right next to it. If you’re having trouble finding it, just text me on KakaoTalk, and I can send you some photos of the entrance to help you out.
I want to make sure you feel comfortable and relaxed when you arrive. So, don’t hesitate to reach out if you need any help finding the studio.
How to Book and What to Expect
The easiest way to reach me is through KakaoTalk or Instagram DM. My KakaoTalk ID is listed at the bottom of this page. Just send me a message, and we can start chatting about your ideas. I speak Korean, of course, and my English is conversational – enough for consultations. My Chinese is pretty basic, but for complex designs, we can definitely use translation apps to make sure we’re both on the same page.
Usually, we’ll chat about your idea first – what kind of design you’re looking for, the size, the placement, and any specific details you have in mind. Then, I’ll sketch something out for you based on our conversation. We can make adjustments and revisions until you’re completely happy with the design.
I work by appointment only, so it’s best to book in advance. Weekends tend to get booked up pretty quickly, so if you’re planning on coming on a Saturday or Sunday, try to book at least a few weeks ahead of time.
I accept both cash and card payments. The deposit is usually 50,000 won, which is non-refundable. This just helps me secure your appointment and ensures that you’re serious about getting the tattoo.
Taking Care of Your New Tattoo (Super Important!)
Okay, so aftercare is SUPER important for ensuring that your tattoo heals properly and looks its best. I’ll explain everything in detail after we’re done, but here’s a quick rundown of what you need to know:
- Remove the initial wrap after 3-4 hours ONLY. Don’t re-bandage it or use any wrap again after removal. Your skin needs to breathe!
- Wash gently with just clean water 2-3 times daily. No harsh soaps or scrubbing. Just gently rinse the area with lukewarm water.
- If you want to use a product, get a tattoo-specific aftercare balm. Apply it VERY thinly. A little goes a long way!
- ABSOLUTELY NO swimming (pools, ocean) for at least 2 weeks. Swimming pools are full of bacteria and chlorine, which can cause infections and damage your tattoo.
- Avoid hot baths and saunas. The heat and moisture can interfere with the healing process.
- Protect your tattoo from direct sunlight. Sunlight can fade the colors of your tattoo.
- No heavy exercise for at least 48 hours. Sweating can cause irritation.
- No alcohol for at least 3 days. Alcohol can thin your blood and affect the healing process.
- Don’t over-moisturize! Too much balm can clog your pores and actually delay healing.
The surface of your tattoo will heal in about 2-3 weeks, but complete healing takes about a month. Remember that pain is totally manageable – think of it as more of a discomfort, like a continuous scratching. Areas with more fat or muscle hurt less, while bony areas tend to be a bit more sensitive. Color doesn’t hurt more than black ink.
And most importantly, if you have any concerns at all during the healing process, please don’t hesitate to message me! I’m here to help you every step of the way.
Before You Come (Important Tips!)
Here are a few things to keep in mind before you come in for your appointment:
- Eat a good meal before coming. It really helps with the process. Getting a tattoo can lower your blood sugar, so it’s important to have a full stomach.
- NO alcohol the night before or the day of your appointment. Alcohol thins your blood, which can make you bleed more during the tattooing process and affect healing.
- Bring your ID or passport. It’s required by law to verify your age.
- Get a good night’s sleep. Being well-rested will help you relax and make the process more comfortable.
- Small tattoos usually take 1-2 hours, while palm-sized ones may take 3-4 hours. Plan accordingly!
- Wear comfortable clothes that allow easy access to the tattoo area. For example, if you’re getting a tattoo on your upper arm, wear a loose-fitting shirt.
- If you’re sick or taking blood thinners, let me know. We might need to reschedule your appointment to ensure your safety.
- Send me your design ideas on KakaoTalk or Instagram before you come. This will give me a chance to prepare and make sure we’re both on the same page.
