Getting a tattoo in Seoul is a meaningful souvenir of your trip — but a fresh tattoo is an open wound, and aftercare matters even more when you are travelling. Flights, hot springs, beaches and long sightseeing days all interact with a healing tattoo. This is a practical, traveller-focused guide to caring for a new tattoo while you are still on the road in Korea.

The first 24–48 hours

Leave the covering your artist applied in place for as long as you are told — a few hours for a simple wrap, or up to several days for an adhesive second-skin film. After removing it:

  • Wash the tattoo gently with clean hands and lukewarm water with a mild, fragrance-free soap. Do not scrub.
  • Pat (do not rub) dry with a clean paper towel.
  • Apply a very thin layer of the fragrance-free ointment or lotion you were given.
  • Repeat this gentle wash-and-moisturise twice or three times a day.

A little redness, warmth and clear or lightly coloured fluid in the first day or two is normal. Around days 4–14 the tattoo will flake and peel like a light sunburn — let it. Do not pick or scratch, even when it itches.

Travelling with a fresh tattoo

Can I fly after getting a tattoo in Seoul?

Yes — there is no medical reason you cannot fly with a new tattoo. The main issue is that cabin air is very dry, so keep the tattoo lightly moisturised, wear loose clothing over it, and avoid knocking it with your bag. If your tattoo is small, many travellers prefer to have it done a day or two before flying so the first wash and wrap removal happen somewhere stable rather than at an airport.

Can I go to a jjimjilbang, sauna or hot spring (온천)?

No — not until the tattoo is fully healed, which usually takes about two to three weeks on the surface. Soaking in a jjimjilbang bath, sauna or hot spring submerges the wound in shared warm water and is one of the highest infection risks for a new tattoo, as well as fading the ink. A normal quick shower is fine; soaking is not.

Can I swim or go to the beach?

No — avoid pools, the ocean and beaches until the tattoo has healed (about two to three weeks). Chlorine, salt water and sun all damage a fresh tattoo, and submersion risks infection. If beach or pool days are central to your trip, plan the timing of your tattoo around them (see below).

Sun and sightseeing

Keep a fresh tattoo out of direct sun. On long sightseeing days, cover it with loose clothing rather than relying on sunscreen, which should not go on broken skin. Once the tattoo is fully healed, always apply SPF over it in strong sun — UV is the main cause of long-term fading.

Clothing and your bag

Wear soft, loose clothing over the area, and think about where your backpack or shoulder bag sits. A strap rubbing on a healing tattoo all day is a common traveller mistake — if you carry a bag constantly, choose a placement that your strap will not cross.

What you need (and what you can buy in Korea)

You do not need to pack much. A fragrance-free moisturiser is the main thing, and it is easy to buy in Korea: pharmacies (약국) and Olive Young (올리브영) stores are everywhere and stock suitable fragrance-free lotions and gentle cleansers. Your artist will tell you exactly what to use before you leave the studio.

Healing timeline

  • Days 1–3: Slight redness and tenderness; gentle washing and thin moisturising.
  • Days 4–14: Flaking and peeling; itchiness is normal — do not scratch.
  • Weeks 2–3: Surface looks healed; safe to return to swimming, baths and saunas.
  • Weeks 4–8: Deeper layers finish healing and the colour settles.

When to see a doctor while travelling

See a clinic if you notice spreading redness, increasing pain after the first few days, swelling that worsens, pus, a bad smell, or a fever. These can signal an infection that needs medical care. Seoul has many walk-in clinics and several international clinics with English-speaking staff, so do not wait it out if something feels wrong.

The single best timing tip

Decide when in your trip to get the tattoo based on your plans. If you want beach, pool or jjimjilbang days, book your tattoo for the end of your trip so you are not forced to skip them during the two-to-three-week heal. If your trip is all sightseeing, getting a small tattoo early means the first delicate days happen while you still have a stable base, and you simply keep it moisturised as you travel home.

Frequently asked questions

How soon before my flight home can I get a tattoo?

You can fly the same day if needed. For a calmer first day of healing, leaving one or two days between your session and your flight is ideal, but it is not required.

Can I get a tattoo on the last day of my trip?

Yes. A last-day tattoo is a popular choice precisely because it avoids the swimming, sauna and sun restrictions — you simply keep it clean and moisturised on the journey home and continue normal aftercare there.

Do I need to bring aftercare products to Korea?

No. A fragrance-free moisturiser is all you really need, and it is widely available at Korean pharmacies and Olive Young. Your artist sends you off with clear instructions on what to use.

Is the studio able to advise me in English?

Yes — consultations and aftercare guidance are available in English and Japanese, so you will leave knowing exactly how to look after your tattoo on your trip.
