A lot of people ask me about getting a tattoo in Seoul, especially visitors. They’re curious about the process, what styles are popular, and how to find a good artist. So, I thought I’d write a little guide based on my experience. Hopefully, it answers some of your questions!

Okay, so while I’m known for my Korean traditional art – things like Minhwa paintings and oriental designs – I actually do a wide range of styles. Korean traditional art is my passion, and I love sharing that with people through tattoos. But I’m also really into fine line work, black & gray, old school, dotwork, and of course, minimalist tattoo styles. I enjoy the clean lines and simple elegance of a well-executed minimalist tattoo. It’s all about creating something beautiful with the fewest possible elements.

When it comes to minimalist tattoo designs, I’ve noticed a lot of people are drawn to geometric shapes, single-line drawings, and small symbols. The area is Konkuk/Seongsu, which is a trendy neighborhood with lots of cafes and restaurants, and is known for its Seongsu minimalist tattoo artists. It’s a great place to explore before or after your appointment.

How to Book and What to Expect

Usually, we’ll chat about your idea first. You can send me reference photos, describe what you have in mind, and we can discuss the size, placement, and style. Then, I’ll sketch something for you based on our conversation. I want to make sure you’re completely happy with the design before we start tattooing.

Taking Care of Your New Tattoo

I’ll explain everything in detail after we’re done, but here’s a quick rundown of what you need to know about aftercare:

• Keep the initial wrap on for 3-4 hours only, then remove it – don’t use wrap again after removal.

\n

• Wash gently with just clean water 2-3 times daily – no regular soap! Regular soaps can irritate the tattoo.

\n

• If you want to use products, get tattoo-specific aftercare balm – apply it very thinly. Less is more!

\n

• ABSOLUTELY NO swimming (pools, ocean) for at least 2 weeks. Also, avoid hot baths and saunas. Direct sunlight is also a no-no.

\n

• No heavy exercise for at least 48 hours – sweating can cause irritation.

\n

• No alcohol for at least 3 days – it affects healing.

\n

• Don’t over-moisturize – too much product can clog pores and delay healing.

\n

• Surface healing takes about 2-3 weeks, but complete healing takes about a month.

Before You Come to Your Tattoo Appointment

Here are a few things to keep in mind before your appointment:

• Eat a good meal before coming – it really helps with the process. Having enough energy will make you more comfortable.

• NO alcohol the night before or day of – it affects bleeding and healing.

\n

• Bring your ID or passport – required by law in Korea.

\n

• Get a good night’s sleep – being well-rested makes a big difference.

\n

• Remember that small tattoos usually take 1-2 hours, while palm-sized ones might take 3-4 hours.

• Wear comfortable clothes that allow easy access to the tattoo area.

\n

• If you’re sick or taking blood thinners, please let me know – we might need to reschedule.

The pain level is manageable. Most people describe it as discomfort or like continuous scratching. Areas with more fat or muscle hurt less, while bony areas hurt more. Color doesn’t hurt more than black ink.
