The lion’s motion, kept alive on the skin.
This piece is based on Bukcheong Saja Noreum, a traditional Korean lion mask dance.
Through the lion mask, the dance carries the meaning of driving away harmful spirits and bad fortune, while wishing for peace and good fortune for the village.
I kept the strong form of the lion mask clear, and used the flowing mane like fast brushstrokes to carry the movement and force of the dance.
I wanted the lion’s motion — shaking, turning, and driving away misfortune — to remain alive on the skin.
